2021 July Newsletter

Thank you Mimis

Mimis Out Of School Hours Care was established at Cronulla Public School over 20 years ago and during that time, the program grew to cater for the increasing enrolments at the school. This Friday will be Mimis final day operating at Cronulla. I would like to sincerely thank Mel and the permanent and casual staff from Mimis, for the support and care they have taken of our students and families over the years. We thank them for their service to the Cronulla community and wish them all the best in the future.

Building Works Update

As you would have noticed, building work continues to occur across the school. During the holidays, work will begin on the side oval to run the services for our new Before and After School Care building. Roof remediation work will continue in A Block and we also have a number of classrooms being painted and recarpeted. All of these projects have been carefully planned but do take time. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work towards making the school the best learning environment it can be for our students.

Sporting Success

Congratulations to Mannix who came 2nd at the recent Sydney East Cross Country Carnival. Mannix will now compete at the State Carnival to be held early next term. We wish him all the best.

Casual Teachers

We are currently experiencing a serious shortage of casual teachers; not only at our school but across the Sutherland Shire. I understand this situation extends across the state as well. At Cronulla we try our best to secure casual teachers to cover our class teachers when they are unwell, take leave or are attending professional learning. We try to ensure consistency of the same casual teacher when they are required for more than one day, but unfortunately this is not always possible. On occasion, we have to split a class across a stage when we cannot secure a casual teacher. Please know we are doing our absolute best to ensure every class is covered if their substantive teacher is away.

Staffing news

Recently we said farewell to another wonderful teacher, Miss Evans, who is embarking on a new part of her life – motherhood. We wish her well and look forward to hearing her exciting baby news soon. Replacing Miss Evans is Miss Abbey Simpson who started teaching 3E last week. We welcome Miss Simpson to our school.

Save the date – Open Day

On Thursday 29th July we will be holding our NSW Education Week Open day where parents are welcome into our open classrooms and view performances by our performing arts groups. More information will follow next term.

End of Term 2

As we come to the end of Term 2, I’d like to recognise the enormous effort of our staff and the community support that keeps our school motivated and energised.

This term we have provided many wonderful opportunities for our students. It has been a busy, but rewarding term.

A reminder that we will be holding a whole school assembly on Wednesday 23rd June at 2:30pm to present awards and ribbons from our recent Athletics Carnival.

We look forward to welcoming students back to Term 3 on Tuesday 13th July.

End of Term Assembly

To recognise the achievements of our students a whole school assembly will be held on Wednesday 23rd June at 2.30pm.

Parents are welcome to attend and are requested to complete the COVID check in on arrival. Please note that as this is an outdoor assembly it will dependent on the weather.

Semester One Student Reports

Semester One student reports will be forwarded home on Thursday. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Kindergarten Term 2

Kindergarten students have been super busy this term during Inquiry based learning and have loved this term’s topic ‘Our Imagination’. They have enjoyed learning new nursery rhymes each week and creating solutions to problems such as making a bed that was ‘just right’ or Goldilocks and designing a floating bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff that the mean troll could not fit underneath! We look forward to starting a new topic next term.

This term Kindergarten have also been working hard on consolidating their single sounds and digraphs! Did you know that ‘sh’ is a diagraph? It has two letters but only makes one sound! The Kindergarten teachers are so proud of the progress that students have made this term.

In Mathematics, Kindergarten have been busy learning about 2D and 3D shapes, time, fractions, area, length, volume and capacity and of course revising our number formation and number work!

This term, Kindergarten were lucky enough to have Miss Jenna come in each Friday and teach dance. It has been wonderful to see Kindergarten improve each week as they gained confidence and learnt new dance moves. We look forward to continuing dance next term.

The Kindergarten teachers would like to say a big thank you for all of the work that you do at home with your children. It is wonderful to see students making progress with their reading and sight word recognition. Thank you also for engaging with SeeSaw. It is wonderful to be able to share with you the amazing work that your children are doing at school each week. We are very excited about heading into another fun and busy term with our Kindy Superstars in Term 3.

Enjoy your holidays and stay safe.

Term 3 Sport

New South Wales Premier’s Sporting Challenge

The NSW Premier’s Primary School Sport Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. The initiative involves primary school classes participating in a 10 week sport and physical activity challenge.

A student may accumulate time in various sports during lunchtime, in school sport programs, class time, after school or weekend physical activity. Any daily physical activity of moderate to vigorous intensity can be used to accrue time.

Moderate activities could be as simple as brisk walking, bike riding with friends, skateboarding, lawn bowls, playground games, yoga and dancing.

Vigorous activities are associated with such activities as rugby league, Australian Football, netball, aerobics, soccer, running, fitness circuits, dance, swimming laps and training for sport. Cronulla Public School will be participating in this initiative through regular planned and unplanned opportunities for physical activity.

Cronulla Public Race Around Australia

This year our school has registered to participate in Race Around Australia. The initiative is a virtual race, allowing Cronulla Public School to compete against other schools from across New South Wales. The virtual race will begin from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, heading in a northerly direction.

A course on school grounds was mapped out for students to complete during allocated sport and physical activity lessons for the duration of Term 2. After each run, students will log their distance covered via the Race Around Australia app with an accumulated class and school total being registered. Each class will track their distance covered on the map and visit various destinations along the way while monitoring the progress of other participating schools. Physical activity is valued for its physical, social and emotional benefits. It also supports young people to develop communication skills, confidence and resilience.

Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to all students who attended the CPS Athletics Carnival. It was a great day with excellent sportsmanship and performances displayed from all students. A big thank you to the teachers and parents who assisted in the running of the day. These events aren’t possible without your support. A reminder that we will present the ribbons to those students who placed at the carnival at our end of term assembly tomorrow.

Congratulations to the following students who placed in the following events:

Cronulla High School students facilitated a sport coaching workshop on Tuesday the 15th of June at Cronulla Public School. Four other local schools were involved. The Year 10 students from Cronulla High School were excellent role models and organised outstanding activities for the aspiring leaders. They demonstrated skills, activities and games which the leaders participated in.

Our students met today to plan their activities which they will run during lunch times next term for our students. In the past our students have really enjoyed have lunch time activities to join.

The students will be presented with a whistle at the whole school assembly  on Wednesday afternoon.

Library News

A huge thank you to our amazing Stage 1 students and their families for the incredible effort made towards our Night @ the Museum. It was a fantastic night and was wonderful to see so many happy faces, from children and adults. So much work went into the creation of dinosaur models and your efforts are appreciated.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

We have 19 students who have independently completed the Challenge and many more who are close. A PRC incentive is coming up that involves treats. To be invited, you need to have read and added a certain number of books to Student Reading Records so get adding! Kindergarten are having books added to their Student Reading Records at school and will all complete the Challenge. The Challenge finishes at the end of August.
