Principal’s Message

Welcome back to another year at Cronulla Public School. It’s already been a great start to the year with our students settled in their classes and engaged in learning. Our Kindergarten students had a smooth start today and are already feeling welcomed and part of the team.

The beginning of the year is an important time to develop independence and clear expectations for our little people. We thank you for reinforcing the expectation that students are responsible for their learning and belongings. You can help each day by encouraging your children to carry their school bag, bring their lunchbox home from school and take it out of their bag; and say goodbye to you before the bell so they can carry their bag to their class. All these actions send a strong message to our little learners that when at school, they have responsibilities but their teachers are able to help if needed.


This year our school comprises 480 students formed into 20 mainstream classes and 1 support class. Our enrolment numbers entitle us to 19 mainstream classes, however in 2021 we are funding an additional teacher to keep our class sizes lower and create a more manageable class structure across the school.

If you have any concerns about your child’s learning, the classroom teacher is always the first port-of-call. Should you need additional assistance, then please contact the Assistant Principal of your child’s year. You can do this by making an appointment via the office.

Our senior school executive including Deputy Principals and Principal are able to assist you with queries and concerns regarding serious issues or whole school programs. We are all here to help you.

Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Hub

During the holidays, we have been advised that our school will be receiving an Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Hub building, as part of the Before and After School Care (BASC) Reform Program. The OSHC Hub accommodates 60 student places and includes a kitchenette facilities and storage. Additionally, the school is able to utilise the OSHC Hub outside of the OSHC operating hours. We are expecting installation of the hub to occur this term.

Excelsior Rd

At the end of last year, a meeting was held with the Sutherland Shire Council and a representative from the Department of Education regarding the difficulty when dropping-off and picking-up in Excelsior Rd. Discussed during the meeting was the possibility of a Cul De Sac Bulb at the bottom of Excelsior to assist in safe turning of vehicles after drop off with 90 degree street parking. In addition, an additional raised crossing at the top of Excelsior Rd was also discussed. At this stage, the council have agreed to undertake a preliminary survey and design some options for school and community consideration and consultation. I will keep the community as I receive more information.

COVID-19 – Updated School Procedures Term 1

Schools have been provided with updated COVID guidelines. Many of them remain the same as the end of 2020. Please see the following updated procedures for our school:

Morning Drop-Off

Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2: Parents may ‘drop and go’ in the playground.

Parents are asked to leave the site as soon as their child is settled.

Years 3 – 6: Parents are asked to ‘kiss and drop’ at the gate.

Staggered Afternoon Pick Ups

Parents/carers may enter the school grounds after 3.10pm each afternoon and socially distance on the main asphalt area. All students will be released from this area (K-2 at 3:15pm and 3-6 at 3:25pm).

Parents with children in both K-2 and 3-6 are asked to come for the 3:25pm pick up. Teachers will supervise K-2 siblings until the 3:25pm bell.

Please leave the site as soon as you have your child/ren. Students should not be playing in the playground or on play equipment after the school bell.

QR Code

All adults who enter the school are required to sign-in using the COVID Safe Check-in QR Code.

Teacher Meetings

If you need to meet with your child’s teacher, please call the school or send an email to make an appointment. If needed, meetings can occur face-to-face, however, these need to be planned and parents/carers will be required to complete a COVID acknowledgment form at the front office in addition to using the school’s QR code.

Cronulla PS School Counsellor

The school counselling service can assist with referrals to other agencies, advocacy to teachers and other professionals, as well as providing case management for your child. The school counsellor can provide individual counselling to students and support for parents.

The counsellor is an integral member of the school’s Learning Support Team and regularly receives referrals from them. To discuss your child’s needs please contact your class teacher and /or Mrs Ross (the Learning Support Coordinator) to discuss your child in the first instance.

Playground supervision begins at 9.00am each morning. Please do not send your children to school before this time unless they are attending a before school activity eg: running club, dance or band. Our school canteen will reopen tomorrow, Wednesday 3rd February and is moving back to a full menu. Lunch ordering will also restart via Flexischools on this day.

Excelsior Rd School Entry

All parents and children are asked to use the Excelsior Rd entrance.

Parents are unable to access the school grounds by car at any time except in an emergency.

All school gates will be locked from 9.40am except the Excelsior Rd entrance which will be closed, not locked, for parent and visitor access.

Assembly Times Term 1

Assemblies will be held in even weeks from Week 4.

  • K – 2: Fridays 2.30pm – 3.00pm School Hall
  • Primary Years 3- 6: Thursday 3.00pm – 3.25pm

Please note, due to departmental guidelines, parents are unable to attend these assemblies.

School Uniforms

Thank you parents for your efforts to ensure that the children have returned to school in full school uniform.

We have an expectation that all children will wear the school hat which are available at the office.

School hats are also required for all excursions and Friday sport.

School shoes should be black and joggers may be worn for Friday sport.

Please note that girls also have the option of wearing shorts for their uniform.

Meet the Teacher / Grade Information Sessions

Due to departmental guidelines the Grade Information Sessions will be available via zoom this year.

A link will be sent to parents via SkoolBag this week and parents and caregivers will be able to watch the

information session presentation at their convenience.

Following the zoom parents/ caregivers will have the opportunity to ask questions during a live zoom chat

session on Monday 8th February.

The Stage chat sessions will be approximately 20 mins in length and held at the following times.

  • Early Stage 1 – Kindergarten 4.10pm
  • Stage 1 – Year 1 and 2 4:30pm
  • Stage 2 – Year 3 and 4 4:50pm
  • Stage 3 – Year 5 and 6 5:10pm

Please note individual questions/ interviews and or meetings in relation to your child’s progress, can be scheduled for another time.

Information regarding children who will start Kindergarten next year is now available. Please see the office to register your child’s name for 2022.


School Photos – Individual, Class and Family

Individual, class and family school photos will be taken on Tuesday 9th February. We will begin with family photos at 8:30am in the hall followed by individual and class photos (no parents please).

All sporting groups and extra-curricular photos will be taken later in the year.

Parents have the option to pay online through the Don Wood Photography website or send the envelope to school with the cash enclosed. Go to: using our unique school code 168217 which you use to pay online or access team/group photos. 

Please note: all online sibling photograph orders must be placed BEFORE 11:59pm Monday 8th February otherwise payment will need to be made with a red Family Order Envelope with the correct cash prior to or on the day.​

Any special groups/team photos can also be ordered online once the photos have been taken.

Prices for packages start from $29. Family photos are available from $20.

Student Use of Digital Devices and Online Services

The policy governing student use of digital devices and online services was released for implementation in NSW public schools. The policy is available at Please note:

  • primary schools will restrict the use of digital devices, including mobile phones during school hours. Primary-aged students will not be allowed to use digital technology during class time, recess and lunch unless for an educational purpose or where a student needs it for other reasons, such as an adjustment for disability.


Swimming Carnival

Our School Swimming Carnival will be held at Caringbah Leisure Centre (Jacaranda Road Caringbah) on Wednesday 10th February 2021.

All students in Years 3 – 6 will be attending. Students in Year 2 who turn eight (8) during 2021 and can swim 50 metres without stopping are invited to participate.

Year 2 students who turn 8 are advised to only attend if they are serious swimming competitors.

VENUE: Caringbah Leisure Centre (Jacaranda Road Caringbah)

DATE: Wednesday 10th February 2021


TIMES: Leaving school at 8.15am SHARP. Please ensure your child is at school by 8.00am. We will be leaving the venue by 2.30pm.

COST: $15.00 which includes transport and entrance into Caringbah Leisure Centre.

LUNCH: Students should bring their recess and lunch, however snack food is also available for purchase at the pool kiosk. They should bring plenty of drinking water.

* Suitable sun protection including hat, t-shirt, sunscreen and sunglasses (optional)

* A bag to carry everything in (plastic bags for wet gear)

* Towel, goggles and swimming cap (if needed)

* Please label all belongings.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we are guided by Caringbah Leisure Centre’s COVID Safety Rules. These include:

  • No spectators are able to attend the carnival
  • Our school will have exclusive use of the 50 metre pool
  • No novelties can take place

Students who are unable to swim 50 metres have the option to swim in a 25m race in the shallow end of the pool with staff members in the water with them or alternatively they can elect not to swim at all.

Please send all permission notes with payment to the office by Friday 5th February 2021.

P&C February Meeting

The February P&C Meeting will be held tonight at 7pm in the school hall.

A big welcome back to our returning school community and on behalf of the P&C, a warm WELCOME to the new families joining us at Cronulla Public School.

At Cronulla Public, we have a very active P&C, and a great relationship with the Leadership and Teaching body of the school. We work together collaboratively for the benefit of the school and ultimately the students. Over the past years we have had some very successful fund raising events that have improved facilities and also updated computer hardware within the school.

This year we are again planning to hold meetings both during the day and in the evening, to try and allow more parents to attend. As soon as dates & times are finalised we will have them published for you all to see.

Attending the meetings gives you an opportunity to meet other parents in the school, to hear about what’s happening at school and to share any thoughts or ideas. Contrary to popular belief, attending a meeting DOES NOT mean that you will be given a job or a title!

CANTEEN: Quin Wernej, the canteen co-ordinator, is currently preparing the roster for Term 1 and is always looking for volunteers.

You can volunteer as little or as often as you can, or you can just be on call.

UNIFORMS: The P&C sell 2nd hand uniforms. Great quality uniforms can be purchased for reasonable prices, AND all money raised goes back to the school. Leanne Wells is the co-ordinator of our 2nd hand uniforms, and she can be contacted on 0414 912 601, should you require any uniforms. Donations of good quality used uniforms are always appreciated and can be left at the office.

FACEBOOK: The P&C have a Facebook page “Cronulla Public School P & C” that you can jump on & Like. It will keep you up to date with all of the P&C news and happenings.

P&C AGM Tuesday 2nd March 2021, 7.00pm

At the beginning of each school year all roles on the P&C are made vacant. Anyone wishing to become a member of the P&C committee or to apply for a specific role on the committee should come along to the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 2nd March. Positions on the committee are voted on by those present on the night.

Creative Arts


Dance classes resumed yesterday Monday 1st February. All classes are taught by a qualified dance instructor with students working towards developing their dance skills. Dance lessons will be held as follows:

Monday 8:00am Year 4 Girls Dance Group for girls in Years 4

8:40am Year 3 Girls Dance Group for girls in Year 3

Wednesday 8:00am Year 5 / 6 Girls Dance Group for girls in Years 5 and 6

Thursday 8:00am Primary Boys Dance Group for boys in Years 3 to Year 6

Friday 8:40am Year 2 Dance Group for boys and girls in Year 2

The annual fee of $120 per student, is inclusive of all lessons and extra rehearsals for the year. It is payable by Week 6 Term 1.

Payment of $120 can be made by cash, cheque or POP (via the school website).

Please understand that to be a member of the dance group, regular attendance and commitment for the year is mandatory. Students will have many opportunities to perform throughout the year which can include –

  • School Spectacular (Selection process for inclusion – max 16 students chosen )
  • Kurrunulla Eisteddfod
  • Sutherland Shire Music Festival Dance Extravaganza
  • Night of Stars

Further information regarding performance outfits for the events listed above and the costs will be forwarded as soon as the events are confirmed.

Junior Ukulele Groups

Students from Year 1 to Year 3 are invited to join a ukulele group. There will be two groups- Junior Ukulele Performing Group and Junior Ukulele Training Group. Numbers are limited in each group so please be quick to forward your ‘expression of interest ‘to the office to avoid disappointment.

Lessons should commence Week 5. Please note that the Junior Ukulele Performing Group will rehearse Tuesday afternoons after school 3.30pm – 4.15pm.


Information regarding choir and departmental guidelines will be forwarded as soon as it is made available.


The BandTime program follows an educationally sound structure that teaches musical skills while students have fun participating in a Concert Band and socialising with their peers.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE – Our program is structured around a full band rehearsal of up to 1 hour per week, and smaller group tutorials held once per week. If a rehearsal or tutorial is missed due to a clash with a school event, where possible this is rescheduled. There will often be extra performances throughout the year which cover any missed sessions.

Rehearsals and tutorials will commence from Tuesday 2nd February.

All equipment which has been ordered and paid for will be delivered to their first lesson.

Training Band students will receive as part of their starter pack an Essential Elements Book (their method book), a folder for sheet music, pencil and bag.

What to expect:

  • One page of Essential Elements Method Book per week, plus band pieces (from Term 2) which forms the student homework each week
  • Essential Elements Interactive provides a wealth of resources including a recording studio, backing tracks, helpful worksheets and videos to support student learning. Full instructions on how to set up your Essential Elements Interactive account are found inside the back cover of the student book. Follow the instructions and click “I don’t have a school code”, parental consent is required to activate the account.

Twice yearly reports and feedback – progress reports are issued at the end of Term 2 and Term 4.

How you can help your child to get off to the best start :

  • Initiate a family friendly practice schedule of 15 minutes each 4 – 5 days per week.
  • Negotiate practice times to fit around family routine (sometimes before school is more convenient) and set up a suitable practice area.

Please be prompt and prepared for your rehearsal to make the most out of the time.

Tutorials – The location and timing of tutorials will be finalised this week and are planned to begin on Friday morning 5th February.

Running Club

This year Running Club will be available to all interested students and will be structured as follows:

Years 3 to 6 : Friday mornings beginning Friday 12th Feb :Time – 8:30 – 9:00am

Kindergarten to Year 2 :Thursday mornings beginning Thursday 18th Mar :Time – 8:30 – 9:00am

We look forward to seeing all of our runners for a busy year of training.

Cronulla Zone PSSA Dates For the Calendar

This term students in Years 3-6 will be given the opportunity to participate in Season 1 of either the Junior or Senior PSSA Girls’ Soccer, Boys AFL or Mixed Basketball teams for Cronulla Public School. As it’s a non-competitive friendly season, teams will be formed by the order in which notes are returned to school.

Swimming Lessons – YEAR 3-6 TERM 1 SPORT OPTIONAL

For Term 1 sport your child has the opportunity to undertake swimming lessons at the Cronulla Pavilion Sports Complex. Lessons will commence on Friday 19th February and conclude on Friday 26th March (6 weeks).

Swimming lessons will take place on Friday afternoon. Children will be leaving school at 1:15pm and return by 3:15pm. Students will walk to the swimming centre under the supervision of the teachers. The children will be assessed on their swimming ability and placed into the appropriate group.

The cost of swimming lessons is $66.00. The cost includes 6 swimming lessons.

Please be advised that due to teacher supervision and the swimming centre restrictions, this group will be restricted to the first 50 students. Payment will be due by Friday 12th February (Wk 3).

This learning experience addresses elements within the PDHPE curriculum including Movement Skill/Performance and Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles. It also aims to develop students’ skills and understanding in swimming and water safety.

Payment of $66 can be made by either cash, cheque or POP (Via the school website). Late payment may forfeit your child’s placement within the program.

Borrowing and Library Bags
Library lessons commence straight away. Yay! All students have the opportunity to, and are encouraged to borrow in every lesson. Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 can borrow up to 4 books at a time and students in Years 2 – 6 can borrow up to 6 books at a time. Library bags are essential to protect books as they travel to and from school. A library bag can be any type of bag as long as it protects books.  Please label all library bags.

New Books

We have been so fortunate at CPS to be continually building our collection thanks to school and P&C funding and also donated books. There will be new books available for borrowing from day 1!


Lunchtime Library
Throughout the year, various activities are offered in the library during the second half of lunch. The library is open at this time from Monday to Thursday. Students are welcome to come and read, draw, play games or just chill and have a break from the playground. Specifically run groups or activities

are advertised outside the library and/or on facebook and in the newsletter.

Story and Surprise
Story and Surprise is one such lunch group and will be running again this year. It is available to students in Kindergarten and Year 1 (up to 50) on a Monday during the second half of lunch. Students listen to a story then receive a little ‘surprise’ to remind them of the story.

Borrowing and Returning

Our Returns box has been revamped and can’t wait to receive books that have already been enjoyed.


If you still have books from last year, please return them ASAP. Books are generally loaned over a 1 week period but books can easily be renewed for longer periods.

Secure Internet Browsing and Email for Students

The NSW Department of Education is committed to providing a secure e-Learning environment to enrich learning opportunities for all students in NSW Public schools. During 2021 your child will be provided with access to secure internet browsing and eventually email.

Email is a method of communicating on the internet by sending and receiving written messages. Your child’s email account is protected by software to block out inappropriate messages. Your child will be provided with an individual username and a password will ensure that they receive internet filtering and that no one else can access their email.

All students who use the internet at school are taught that they must follow the code of conduct outlined in each school’s Student Access to the Internet Policy. This policy includes the action that may be taken by a school if students do not follow this code of conduct. This policy also follows specific privacy guidelines which make it clear that personal information, and information that would mean they could be identified, is not to be revealed and that personal account details remain confidential.

Students will be able to access their personal email from computers at home and other locations through private internet service providers. All internet browsing at home will be directed through your own internet service provider. We recommend that you install filtering software at home and be aware of filtering software at other locations.

As long as your child is enrolled at a public school or TAFE college in NSW they will have access to secure internet browsing and email. The NSW Department of Education respects your right as a parent to refuse your child permission to access this facility. If you do not agree to your child having access to this facility, you will need to provide notification in writing to the school within two weeks of receiving this letter.

School Attendance and Absence Notification

Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their potential, and increase their career and life options. Schools in partnerships with parents are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff, as part of their duty of care, record and monitor part and whole day absences. Schools, in providing a caring teaching and learning environment, which addresses the learning and support needs of students, including those with additional learning and support needs or complex health conditions, foster students’ sense of wellbeing and belonging to the school community. ’School Attendance in Gov’t Schools Procedures – 2015 – page1’

If your child is absent, an SMS will be sent to provide parents and caregivers the ability to instantly explain an absence by replying to the SMS on the day of the absence. With this system, it is important to keep your mobile phone number up to date, so please contact the school office to amend this if needed.

If you know in advance that your child will be away from school, please send notification through the school website or SkoolBag app.

Learning time lost from Kindergarten to Year 10

I day absent from school each week = 440 days = 2 years and 1 term

2days absent per week = 880 days = 4 years and 2 terms

3 days absent from school each week = 1320 days = 6 years and 1 term

5 days per term = 220 days = 1 year and 1.5 terms

10 days per term = 440 days = 2 years and 3 terms

Whose responsibility is it?

  • Parents are legally responsible for explaining their child’s absences to the school within 7 days of the absence/s
  • Principals are legally responsible for accurate roll marking at school and contacting parents if a child’s absences remain unexplained by the parent.

Explanations for absences

  • Absences from school may be justified if your child;
  • has to go to a religious ceremony
  • is required to attend a serious or urgent family situation
  • is too sick to go to school or has an infectious illness.

Do I have to let the school know my child is absent?

  • By law, parents are required to supply the school with a justified reason for their child’s absence.
  • The explanation can be written, verbal or front office staff or electronic mail to the school.

What if my child is late to school or needs to leave early?

  • As with whole day absences, there needs to be a reason supplied to the school for the ‘partial’ absence
  • If arriving late please escort your child to the front office and sign them in
  • If leaving early please come to the front office to sign your child out.

What if my child is going on holiday during school time?

  • Inform the principal in advance and request leave/exemption from school for your child
  • The school may be able to provide tasks your child needs to complete while they are absent from class

Do not keep children away from school for-

  • Birthdays
  • Shopping
  • Minding other children
  • Haircuts
  • minor family events

Tips for success

  • Have set bed and wake up times
  • Have uniform and school bag ready the night before
  • Make lunches the night before
  • Breakfast is important!
  • Set time for homework – routine is important
  • Turn the TV on only AFTER the jobs are done
  • BE FIRM – children must go to school
  • BE FIRM – a birthday is not a holiday
  • BE POSITIVE – and provide lots of encouragement
  • Time your arrival at school and leave quickly

As we are aware, parking within Cronulla remains difficult at the best of times and the local area surrounding the school is no different.  For everyone’s safety, we ask that our school community refrain from double parking or parking across driveways when dropping off and picking up from school. Parking rangers do regularly patrol the area and will issue fines for illegal parking. Please consider parking a couple of streets away and use the time walking to the car to catch up with your child.

Driving and parking safely near the school

The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools.

You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

  • drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road
  • never call out to them from across the road – it is very dangerous
  • always take extra care in 40km school zones
  • follow all parking signs – these help keep your child as safe as possible
  • park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate
  • never double park – it is illegal and puts children at risk
  • never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm
  • model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child
  • always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

School Zone Traffic offences

To help schools keep the school zone safer for all pedestrians and drivers there are seven new traffic infringements with new fines.
None of the seven offences attract demerit points when committed elsewhere on the road but in a school zone they each come with two points.
The changes are:
1. Stopping in intersection – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.
2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.
3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.
5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points.
6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.
7. Parallel park close to dividing line – Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

Composite Classes

Classes that are made up of children of different year levels have traditionally been called composite classes. In recent times, these classes have also been labelled stage-based classes, multi aged or family classes

At the beginning of a new school year, many parents might suddenly find their child in a composite class. Naturally, questions arise: for the older group – will my child be held back? For the younger group – will my child be able to keep up?

Composite classes (stage-based classes) have been the source of much controversy over the years, with parents often believing that their children are being disadvantaged in some way by being in one.

The key to understanding composites is realising that growth is determined in stages and not magically by ages.

Composite classes (stage-based classes) teach children who are at compatible stages – not ages. It doesn’t mean your child is academically challenged or academically gifted.

There are two reasons why these classes are formed:

  • Administrative – this is where there is an uneven enrolment in school years and classes need to be formed across a number of school years. This occurs in most primary schools and especially in smaller primary schools.
  • Educational – where classes are formed on the basis of educational rationale as they are seen to have educational benefit for the student.

Classes are formed following either of the above criteria or a combination of these criteria.

Overall, the wide variety of ways that primary classes are formed include:

  • parallel
  • random selection
  • streamed
  • multi age
  • family
  • vertical grouping
  • composite

Legislation allows students to start school between 4 yrs. 6 mths and 6 yrs. This range of ages continues to be reflected throughout the schooling process

It is acknowledged that there are significant individual differences in each child to be addressed regardless of age. The formation of classes can reflect and cater for these individual differences.

The organisation of classes should take into account current research on learning and best practice in teaching and learning. These include individual differences such as:

  • different learning rates and styles;
  • developmental stages of children;
  • social and emotional development;
  • varied social background.

Classes should provide opportunities for:

  • different learning styles;
  • cooperative learning;
  • development of lifelong learners;
  • Development of students taking responsibility for their own learning.

The good thing about composite classes (stage-based classes) is that it draws attention to individual needs and development and facilitates individualised learning. Managing composite classes (stage-based classes) requires experienced teachers. Teachers at Cronulla Public School are well-versed and experienced in conducting programs in composite classes (stage-based classes).

Older students are not held back in composite classes (stage-based classes). A range of programs are used, in most curriculum areas, for the different groups of students according to their level of development. There will be some joint activities; such as in art and drama, HSIE and Science & Technology.

Composite classes (stage-based classes) can provide significant benefits to both the younger and older students in the class. Older students can benefit from helping younger students in co-operative learning situations. The younger students have the opportunity of enhanced learning experiences where they are ready for it.

The Department of Education states that overseas research has shown children in composite classes do no better or worse academically than their peers in straight grade class, but that, socially, their development is enhanced. They are more confident, can operate better as part of a group, are more assertive, become more independent learners and better problem-solvers. They also make friends outside of their standard age-groups.

Anaphylaxis Procedures and Notification

The Anaphylaxis Procedures for Schools are mandatory requirements for NSW government schools and preschools.

Anaphylaxis is a severe and sometimes sudden allergic reaction. It can occur when a susceptible person is exposed to an allergen (such as a food or an insect sting). Reactions usually begin within minutes of exposure and can progress rapidly over a period of up to two hours or more. Anaphylaxis is potentially life threatening and always requires an emergency response.

It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school that their child has an allergy and is at risk of anaphylaxis. This notification should occur either at the time of enrolment, or if the student is already enrolled, as soon after diagnosis as possible.

As with other serious health conditions, it is important that schools put in place strategies to manage a student at risk of anaphylaxis at school or while the student is engaged in school related activities.

If your child does have an allergy, even if it’s not life threatening, you need to inform the school. This includes students with Asthma. To comply with the DEC Anaphylaxis Procedures for Schools’, we require you to complete the ‘Students with Allergies’ Appendix 1 form and return it to the school office as soon as possible.

In addition, if your child is at risk of a severe allergic reaction, please complete ‘Authorisation to Contact Doctor’ Appendix 3, ‘Severe Allergies – Information from the Doctor’ Appendix 4 and the ‘Individual Health Care Plan’ Appendix 6.

Students with Asthma will need to have an Asthma Action Plan completed by their doctor as well. Please see attached form.

Anaphylaxis Awareness

What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life threatening. It must be treated as a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment and urgent medical attention. A severe allergic reaction usually occurs within 20 minutes of exposure to the trigger and can rapidly become life threatening.

Common causes of anaphylaxis in childhood include insect stings and food allergy (e.g. peanuts, nuts, fish, shellfish, eggs, dairy).

Signs and Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis may occur almost immediately after exposure or within the first 20 minutes after exposure. Rapid onset and development of potentially life threatening symptoms are characteristic markers of anaphylaxis.

Allergic symptoms may initially appear mild or moderate but can progress rapidly. The most dangerous allergic reactions involve the respiratory system (breathing) and/or cardiovascular system (heart and blood pressure).

How common is peanut allergy?

It’s been calculated that highly sensitised individuals can react to as little as 1/2000th of a single peanut. If there is ongoing exposure, even to small amounts, it can take less and less to cause a reaction as time goes by. This is because repeated exposure boosts the immune response, and the IgE antibody levels rise.

What kind of exposure can lead to severe reactions?

Although most life-threatening reactions are triggered by ingested foods, serious reactions can occur from skin contact, eye contact and inhalation of food particles. In young children, even though the initial contact might be on the hands or arms, the reaction can spread through scratching and rubbing of the face and eyes.

In the hot summer months remember to encourage your child to protect themselves from the sun by:

  • Always applying sunscreen before they go outside
  • Always wearing a hat and long sleeve/collar top when playing outside
  • Try to stay in the shade during peak UV forecasts
  • Always bring a bottle of water to school to keep hydrated.
