Principal’s Message

As we come to the end of Term 1 it is always important to look back and reflect on the many opportunities and initiatives that contribute to school life at Cronulla PS.

Year 4 have recently returned from their time at the Berry Sport and Rec Camp. It was great to hear how our Year 4 students challenged themselves in the activities and demonstrated resilience and determination over the three days. For many of these students it was their first time away from home without their family.

Additionally, last week I had the absolute pleasure of travelling with Year 6 for their annual 5 day camp in Western NSW. The highlights for me were visiting the staff and students at Wellington Public School, bike riding through Western Plain Zoo and spending the time away from school with our senior students. I would like to recognise and acknowledge all the students who demonstrated excellent behaviour and represented the school proudly during the week away. It was an amazing experience with so many highlights which the children will always remember.

A very special thank you to the all the teachers involved in both the Year 6 and Year 4 camps which have taken place over the last fortnight – Mrs Ross, Miss Richards, Miss Howlett, Miss Dwyer, Mr Mealing and Mr Allum who accompanied the students on these trips. Programs such as these are not possible without dedicated staff who are willing to take on additional duties for the benefit of our students.

Term 2 Pick Up Arrangements

As of the first day back in Term 2, staggered finish times will no longer be in place and we will return to all students finishing at 3:25pm. Please be reminded to follow the road and parking rules when dropping off and picking up students from school.

Happy Holidays

I would like to thank the wonderful staff, both teaching and non-teaching for all that they do to support students at Cronulla Public. Much goes on behind the scenes to ensure outstanding educational programs as well as providing a safe and happy environment for the students. Thank you also to the parents who have supported our school in so many ways this term. I wish you all a safe, happy and restful holiday. School resumes on Tuesday 20 April.

Kind regards,

Trent Bridgland

Intention to apply for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2022

A note regarding 2022 opportunity classes was sent out to Year 4 students yesterday.

Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Successful students will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6.

Testing and assessment

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. Students who wish to be considered for opportunity class placement will sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Wednesday 21 July 2021.

How to apply

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2021, you need to apply between Tuesday 20 April 2021 and Friday 7 May 2021. You will need to access the online application at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5. You must not use the child’s email address.

If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after Tuesday 20 April 2021.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

Important – the school cannot apply on your behalf. Should you have any questions, please refer to flyer at the end of Newsletter.

Harmony Week

Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. In Week 8, students wore an orange coloured accessory and participated in a range of activities as part of our Harmony Week celebrations. These celebrations created opportunities for children and teachers to think, talk about and recognise how our differences make Australia a great place to live.

Year 4 Camp Report

Year 4 were lucky enough to attend Berry Sport and Recreation Centre for a 3 day camp in week 8 of this term. Students thrived whilst participating in various skill-building activities like archery and kayaking. These activities challenged each individual but also provided opportunities for students to form new relationships with peers, learn life-long skills and significantly improve their ability to work as a team. Year 4 and accompanying teachers had so much fun!

Year 6 Camp

Last week Year 6 students participated in the annual Western NSW camp. The program enables our students to participate in many experiences. Some of the highlights included the Scenic World rides at the Blue Mountains, gold panning at Bathurst Goldfields, visiting Wellington Caves, visiting Wellington Public School, Dubbo gaol tour and then the zoo snooze experience at Dubbo Western Plains Zoo.

The students are to be acknowledged for their willingness to participate in all activities even when it was raining or they had very early starts to the day. An amazing trip which they will always remember.

Well done Year 6!

Cross Country

C.P.S are excited to host our annual Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday of week 10 (March 31). It will be a whole school event with students who are under 8 years participating in a shorter fun-run. Those turning 8 and up will be participating in competitive races ranging from 2km to 3km.

Note: Students who are in year 2 and are turning 8 this year can choose to race in either the competitive event (2km) or participate in the fun run (approximately 1km) with the remainder of the year 2 students.

We encourage parents who attend to come for their child’s race only to help promote social distancing.

Sport

Sport Congratulations

Congratulations to Thomas W and Harrison R on successfully trialling for the Cronulla Zone Tennis Team. Both boys played exceptionally well and were chosen to represent our Zone at the upcoming Sydney East trials at the start of next month.

Well done boys, we hope to see you playing in the Australian Open one day!
